Robert Carpenter – Lead Instructor / President Robert Carpenter is a highly-decorated
veteran law enforcement officer and
professional instructor. Carpenter started his law enforcement
career in 1992 with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, Tacoma,
Washington, where he currently serves as a Deputy Sheriff Patrol
Officer. Prior to becoming a law enforcement
officer, Carpenter spent four years in the U.S. Armed Forces, and served our
country during operation Desert Storm in 1990 and 1991.
During his law enforcement career,
Carpenter has held a multitude of
specialty assignments including School Resource Officer, drug
investigator, DEA Federal Task Force Agent, SWAT team member, Field
Training Officer, defensive tactics instructor, firearms instructor,
chemical agents and less-lethal munitions instructor, tactical entry
team instructor, active shooter instructor, and certified Washington
State Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Law Enforcement
Academy Tactical Officer and General Instructor.
Carpenter’s career as a law enforcement officer has been exemplary.
Carpenter quickly attained the rank of Master Patrol Officer, the
highest deputy sheriff’s grade on his department, and he still strives
to improve his professional knowledge and expertise. Carpenter is a
decorated patrol officer earning eight commendations for outstanding
performance, the medal of merit for training, and is a two-time Medal
of Valor recipient; his department’s highest commendation awarded for
“bravery and heroic action above and beyond the call of duty”.
Carpenter is well respected among his peers and has earned the
reputation of being a truly dedicated law enforcement professional.
An avid martial artist his whole life, Carpenter earned his first
black belt in Karate at 16 years of age. He has fought competitively
in martial arts and western boxing, winning numerous championship
titles. Carpenter has taught martial arts and defensive tactics his
whole life and proved himself by becoming one of his department’s
defensive tactics instructors in 1997. Carpenter has since earned
certification through the Washington State Criminal Justice Training
Commission as a Law Enforcement Master Defensive Tactics Instructor.
Carpenter continues to train competitively and instruct law
enforcement officers in defensive tactics and use of force.
Carpenter has been a member of his department’s SWAT team member for
over eleven years, where he currently serves as an Assistant Team
Leader and Grenadier. Carpenter has developed and instituted realistic
training for team members in the fields of handgun, sub-machine gun,
less-lethal and chemical agent munitions, building entry tactics,
high-risk warrant services, armed barricaded subjects and active
shooter situations. In 2006, Carpenter distinguished himself by
earning the Team Medal of Merit for his part in developing advance
active shooter training, which greatly enhanced the readiness of his
SWAT team, and his SWAT Team’s “Most Inspirational” award for his
consistent dedication to training law enforcement officers.
Carpenter’s unparalleled service and expertise as a law enforcement
officer and trainer acquired him a position at the Washington State
Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) Basic Law Enforcement
Academy (BLEA), where he served for almost three years training
recruit law enforcement officers from all over the state. A highly
respected instructor, Carpenter was the core block instructor and
subject matter expert in the field of patrol procedures and defensive
tactics, where he helped develop much of the patrol procedures
curriculum still taught at the academy today. Carpenter’s extensive
field experience helped combine the various disciplines of defensive
tactics, firearms and patrol procedures to create realistic training
using problem-based scenarios, which allowed students to learn skills
quickly and apply in real-life situations.
